The Bolowei of Niger Delta, Chief Tunde Smooth, has been announced as Father of the Day for the 2025 edition of the Ijaw Media Conference, an annual event convened by the Ijaw Publishers Forum(IPF).
Now in its second year, the conference will focus on the theme, “Safeguarding Niger Delta’s Natural Resources for Future Generations,” reflecting growing concern over environmental pressures affecting land, rivers and coastal communities across the region.
Chief Smooth’s confirmation followed a courtesy visit on Tuesday by members of the Central Working Committee of the Forum, led by its Chairman, Pastor Arex Akemotubo.
During the visit, Akemotubo said this year’s theme highlights the urgency of responsible stewardship, as well as the role of the media in strengthening public consciousness on issues of environmental protection.

He explained that the Forum aims to promote fair reportage, deepen public engagement and emphasise the responsibilities of leaders in preserving the Niger Delta’s cultural and natural heritage. According to him, Chief Smooth’s longstanding commitment to cultural development and regional advocacy made him a natural choice for the honour.
Responding, Chief Smooth commended the delegation and stressed the importance of collaboration among traditional institutions, professional bodies and community groups in advancing the collective interest of the Ijaw nation. He applauded the Forum’s efforts to deploy media platforms in defence of the region’s environment and assured them of his full support for the forthcoming conference.
He further called on stakeholders across the Ijaw nation to unite behind initiatives that protect the environment, safeguard natural resources and secure a sustainable future for younger generations.
