Dr. Goodluck Jonathan (GCFR), Former Nigerian President, Bayelsa State Governor, Sen. Douye Diri, and Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, are among the key figures set to attend the Pre-Summit Conference of the 1st Pan-Ijaw Economic Summit 2024.
The event will take place on October 17th and 18th at the Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, as a precursor to the main Summit, scheduled for December 3rd – 5th in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Governors from Edo, Akwa Ibom, Ondo, Delta, and Niger states are also expected to attend the event, which is themed “Environmental Regeneration and Economic Sustainability.”
The former Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, will serve as the Chairman for the Opening Ceremony, while Professor Steve Azaiki (OON) is the Principal Convener.
Organized by the Azaiki Foundation in partnership with the Ijaw National Congress (INC), the Summit aims to address key challenges facing the Ijaw people, including environmental degradation, poverty, and unemployment. The Summit will gather experts from various fields, including policy makers, industry leaders, and representatives from the Ijaw diaspora, to discuss solutions for sustainable development and economic growth in the Niger Delta.
Key topics of the conference will include unlocking potentials and opportunities in the marine and blue economy of Ijawland and the Niger Delta, environmental regeneration, and economic sustainability, transforming the Niger Delta coastline into a tourism haven, agricultural development, and wetlands infrastructure. Other discussions will cover youth economic empowerment, transportation development, gender inclusivity and women’s rights, infrastructure protection, security, and prevention of oil theft in the Niger Delta.
The summit will also welcome Ijaws from the diaspora, with attendees from Canada, Germany, France, Australia, and other countries expected to participate. It aims to facilitate strategic engagements that will create a brighter, more prosperous future for the Ijaw people and the Niger Delta region.
